Study Day in 24 Hours! We still need healthy snacks, general snacks, and beverages!

Thanks to everyone for your incredible generosity. We've had 65% of the food we need pledged - our greatest needs now are snacks, healthy snacks, and beverages - but entrees seem to be well-covered. (We've also had dozens of donations of casseroles, mac 'n cheese, etc. that aren't reflected in the spreadsheet.) We have over TWENTY extra meat chili donations that the graph can't reflect! Fantastic!
Needs are reflected in the graph below:

We really appreciate your willingness to serve and could not make this day happen without your help. A couple notes:

If you are bringing food: Please drop it off in the upstairs kitchen by Thursday night, Dec. 17; please bring all food in disposable containers labeled “Study Day” and place in the appropriate location (there will be labeled food carts for dry goods and containers/spaces in the refrigerator/freezer).

If you are volunteering to work on Study Day: Upon your arrival, please make your way to the information desk upstairs in the atrium. Simply sign-in and you will be directed to your assigned service location/job!

If you haven't currently signed-up: Please complete the online registration at https://www.blackhawkchurch.org/connect/popup_online_signup.php?id=33 and know that we are currently in the greatest need of beverages, salads/veggies, and snacks!

Thanks in advance for your help and hard work!

We need more food and beverages!

The greatest needs are for the snacks/munchies - both fun (chex mixes, chips) and healthy (fruits and veggies - drop 'em off raw - we'll make the nice looking trays!)! We're also really low on beverages - we have 1,000 bottles of water pledged, but juice, gatorade, and soda are all still needed!
Thanks so much for your generosity. See our progress and specific needs by clicking on the graphs below!

Study Day Tutors!

This semester we've again compiled a grid of when tutors will be available on study day, and what subjects they specialize in. We've got people who know everything from math (algebra to calc 3!) to chemistry to engineering to Spanish! And of course lots of friendly faces to edit your papers!

Please consider taking advantage of these skilled professionals (many are professors, TAs and graduate students!) and stopping by the tutoring station (south end of the atrium) on study day! Click the grid below to view a close up of our tutors and when they'll be at study day!

Need for Soups and Chilis

In years past we have asked people to bring in their own recipes and their own crock pots for soups and chilis. This lead t0 80 crock pots that had to be cleaned...you can imagine the mess. It was also literally impossible to keep 80 crock pots hot. We had a couple people assigned to simply switching plugs every 10 minutes to keep them all hot and not blow a fuse.
So, we've started doing things a bit differently. We ask that you stick to 3 basic recipes and bring them in disposable containers. Ice cream buckets (5qt) work the best (so go buy some ice cream for your kids today). Otherwise, gallon ziplock bags or Gladware kind of things work great too.

Below are posted some student-favored recipes here soon for the 3 types of soup that we are going to have (Meat Chili, Vegetarian Chili, Chicken Noodle Soup). We'll also have cards at the Registration desk each Sunday for you to take home.

Also, because you are bringing these soups to church cold we ask that they all arrive on Thursday (Dec. 17th) so we can get an idea how much we have!
Thank you and more information to come!

sooooo...what do we still need?

One of the big questions that we constantly get when planning for Study Day is "What do you still need?" Well I can confidently answer your question with the following graph and explanation.

It looks like we are good on soups, the biggest need is all the sandwich makings (bread, cheese, lettuce, tomato "fixings"), we are also crazy short on snacks and desserts, veggies, and fruit. So please sign up today for those items.

Now on to volunteers, we are in desperate need for some help cleaning the building, we start that at about 11pm on Monday , May 11th. Please sign up if you are a night owl. For other hours we could use some help on Sunday Night, but it looks like we are in great shape for volunteers for the day of study day.

One other thing, if you are a local business or individual that is interested in giving a large quantity of items, please call my cell 608-345-8460 to let me know so I can plan accordingly.
You can find a link for signing up over on the right!

Trying to keep pace

Every semester we have three weeks to get volunteers, until this one.  Love Madison takes place next week, and we dont have services at Blackhawk, as a church we will all be out in the community helping in whatever capacities we can.

So what kind of impact with that have on Study Day?  Hopefully it wont have an impact at all.  Generally week one serves as a reminder that Study Day is coming, the 2nd week is the big push and the third week is a beg-plead for what we still need.  With the loss of the 2nd week of recruiting at church, we are relying heavily on last semester's volunteers and others that know about this site and the online sign up form.

After one service hour we are at 39 volunteers...a good start.  Check back to see what we are still in need of.

Study Day Sponsors

You should have seen the spread of food last semester. It was unreal. Desserts, Potato Bar, Soda, Water, Snacks, Grilling Meats, Soups, Sandwich Bar...the list goes on.

This semester we are looking for a few personal sponsors for a some of the food items. We've done this informally in the past, but this semester we want to take it to the next level. This does not have to be one person handling it all, it could be a life group. Please contact me if you are interested.  Be sure to leave your contact information for me so I can call you with details. Here are the ideas we have...

Potato Bar - we are looking for a couple hundred potatoes, and all kinds of fixings, shredded cheese, broccoli, sliced ham, nacho cheese, sour cream, butter, bacon, salsa.

Nacho Bar - I would estimate 100 servings of chips (There should be more if we need it there), salsa, jalapenos, black beans, refried beans, ground beef, sour cream, guacamole, shredded chicken.

Ice Cream - (Great Life Group Idea) After worship we prepare about 600 servings of ice cream, sponsoring this would mean purchasing the ice cream and coming to church at 5 or 6pm to prepare the ice cream. We dish it up in cups and then put it in the freezer for consumption later.

Brats, Hot Dogs, Burgers - another good one for a life group, or a couple life groups, just to offset the cost. We are looking to serve about 500 burgers, 100 boca burgers, 200 hot dogs, 200 brats. We would need all that meat as well as condiments like katchup, mustard, relish, sauerkraut, onions, tomatoes, we also need charcoal. We fire up the grills at 4ish and go until we run out of food. It takes about 6 people to run the opperation.

Life Group Setup/Take Down - Set up and Take down are two of the hardest things to get recruits for, perhaps because I've not pushed that hard to get them. Usually each requires about two hours of work for 10-20 people, so two life groups would more than cover each. Set Up takes place on Sunday following the 6pm service, take down starts at 11pm on May 11th and goes until we are done (generally between 1 and 2 am.- nigh owls anyone?)

Got an idea - I'm all ears, shoot me an email.

Tutors Needed

We need tutors/academic help for all subjects.

There is always a need for higher level math, chemistry (especially organic and analytical chemistry), physics and Spanish.

Many students also have final papers due, and good proofreaders who can make grammatical, stylistic, and content suggestions are needed.

Tutors should be available for a minimum 2 hour time block between 12 PM and 9PM*. Heaviest need tends to be between 2 PM and 7 PM, so if you can get out of work early or flex your hours to help during this time, that would be great. Please let us know if you can tutor, which subjects, and at what times by May 6th at noon. (If you let us know later we'll absolutely accept your help, but that is our cutoff time for printing the schedule of tutors for students. Doing this allows us to give them the best idea possible of what help they can anticipate having access.

For More information please contact Kate

Study Day Crept Up on us again

Once again Study Day has crept up on us. We have two and a half weeks to finalize plans and be ready for the coming students. It's about this time of year that I get really nervous, and this year is no different. Especially given that we are losing a week of recruiting at church due to Love Madison - I guess that is a good reason.
Keep watching here for information on how you can sign up for help. I'm really hoping we can get as many people signed up early so we have a better idea of how hard to make requests for more help.
